First time pulling the motor/transmission and I'm thinking it's easier if I drop the combo out the bottom rather than pull from the top. Is this correct?

If all the subframe bolts/bushings and suspension parts look good and are basically rust free, go for it.

In the rust belt they may not, at which point, you might be better off going out the top.

Thank you I'm heading in that direction.

I'm also struggling with this connection any tips on how to disconnect this would be appreciated.

I think that's one of the wonderful one time use PCV system fittings. Sometimes you can get lucky squeezing them with pliers to release them. It deforms them just enough to release. There's tabs under the collar that lock them in place. There's u toob videos on them.
