Vacuum pump

Is the vacuum pump a liability on the 3rd gen. I’m hearing in it goes in many cases shrapnel takes out the engine …. Anyone changing them at a mileage interval ? I’m thinking maybe 70k miles just change for the heck of it . I have 2 3rd generation equinox’s and am thinking safe than sorry is a good idea . Do they generally last that long or is 70 k to soon?

It sounds like it should be a recall like many GM vacuum pumps before it. From what I read, it usually makes a ticking noise when it is going bad. If your brake pedal suddenly becomes stiff, do not drive it.

Mine just went out at 75000. Took camshaft with it according to dealer. Common on Malibu as well. GM needs to recall it. Ridiculous

My '19 1.5 has 77.6K miles. Don't have the issue yet but had it in for an oil change at the dealer today. Service writer said he remembers them doing two in the past two years. He said it's a big job just to replace the pump, 'around $1,500'. Yeesh.

I paid $281, parts and labor at my dealer.

That's crazy. It's a $50 part and super easy to access and remove/replace. You can find aftermarket replacements for as low as $40, or pay full retail at a GM parts counter for 3x that.

3 bolts, some clean up a new gasket and you're back to new.

I was at the dealer a few days ago for some work and asked about vacuum pump failures. The service manager thought about it and said they had seen a few on Silverados but none on an Equinox yet. They are one of a chain of six Chevrolet dealers in this area and do a lot of work.

I asked for a proactive quote to replace the vacuum pump (2.0L engine on a 2020) and was quoted $977 plus tax.

My battery is also five years old and auto start/stop is no longer working so I asked for a quote on it, $370 with a 42 month warranty. I said Autozone has the battery with a 36-month warranty for $260 and asked if they could do better on the price. They offered to drop the price to $330 so I declined.

My kid did the same thing at a Hyundai dealer and they matched the Autozone price for a battery, but not this place.
