I did head gaskets 3 yrs ago.
Car ran ok but then blew both gaskets last week.
Has had an occasional light rattle for 6 months.
Cold tap that seems to go away when warm?
I was thinking piston slap?
I rebuilt lifters. Rollers look good. Cam lobes looked good.
Has full on rattle now. Only idled it for 15 min.
What did I miss? Timing chain?
About ready to throw in used motor. Since I’m bored.

Motor is quite compact with heads removed. I’m sure it would be easier to yank remaining shortblock. A used motor is $325. On skid. Or $149 at pull r part. Might wait till spring to do it.

Dad has heated shop. 90mi away. I have aaa towing so it’s not a problem getting it there. I could spend a week visiting folks.

Pulled intake to check lifters/pushrods. Got a used set of lifters at junkyard. Found a motor with no intake. Removing lifters was easy. We will see how it sounds soon.

I put in fresh oil initially. When I pulled intake I knew coolant would dump into valley so I drained new oil again. And it looked bad. Not milk shake but certainly off. So, I put new oil in again. And the rattle is 80% gone, I drove it around for 1/2 hr and the rattle comes/goes depending on acceleration or coasting. I still think bearings are messed up, but it does not sound like a can of marbles.

Old lifters look nice of course. Since I rebuilt each one. I didn’t touch new lifters. I’m not pulling plunger guts out so as to effect their performance. I drove it yesterday. Still has rattle. I’m waiting for warmer weather to pull motor.
Local yard has “good” motor for $275.

Are you going to tear down the old one and see what was going on?

Easy enough when motor is out to pull pan. When motor stalled I couldn’t crank it. I assumed cyl was flooded. It might have a bent rod? I didn’t check piston depths when heads were off. It idles ok now. I was working on another one at same time so I have 2 now.
