This is the first small turbo engine I've owned so trying to learn how to take care of it the best I can. I've known about Low Speed Pre Ignition and what it can do to an engine and have been trying to find out if this GM engine has any history of LSPI and can't find much one way or the other. Not much here about it. Anyone have any info on the 1.5 and LSPI?

Thanks. I didn't ask what oil to use, I'm interested if this particular engine is more or less prone to LSPI events than "average" in small displacement GDIT engines.

Why not Dexos1Gen3? Here's a spider graph comparing the properties of SP & D1G3.

And here comparing SP with VW 508 00 spec. Both equal SP in LSPI proection and both have better qualities in most other categories, the VW spec quite a bit better in wear, sludge, and deposits categories.

You don't hear of 1.5T failures on 2018+ like some of the earlier 1.4s, etc. I'm sure the right oil, changed at the right interval for the individual is very important. I do believe a lot of it is/was built into the design unfortunately.

I was recently put in a time out on another GM board for merely mentioning the fact that I run a non dexos oil in my 1.5T. (Valvoline restore and protect.)

This was after a barrage of beratement from the admin there.

Mobil 1 ESP X2 has that VW 508 00 cert. If I decide to run -20 oil it will be that. Look how it compares to D1G3. Equal in LSPI protection, better in every other category.

Is that chart based on 0w20? The VW spec beats out D1G3 in 7 out of 8 categories if I'm reading it right.

I don't knock D1G3 at all because of my lack of knowledge in the specifics, and I do use it in most of my fleet, most of the time.

My take is if a ~$19 5qt jug of oil meets D1G3 (Supertech for example), how is it really that superior over an off the shelf big name brand that is ~$30 for a 5qt jug that may or may not be D1G3?

VW 508 00 spec is only 0w-20. D1G3 is either 0w-20 or 5w-30. If a guy's ok with something just meeting a spec then ST is fine. I've been using Quaker State because it give good value for a good product not because it's cheap and still carries the D1G3. This is my first little turbo engine and it falls in the category of possible LSPI so I'm looking for better than okay oil for it. This little engine will likely work as hard here in the high country as the 6.6 in the truck does towing. I may do 2 OCs a year in the Equinox and I'm fine with $20/yr more for a really good oil.

I've run Super Tech before in a couple of different vehicles and they didn't blow up. Recently I decided to try ST HM in the 02 Wrangler that has a slight rear main seal leak that Pennzoil HM dried up. Within 1000 miles of putting in the ST the leak came back worse that it was before the Pennzoil. Not acceptable I have a concrete driveway and nice garage floor. Dumped the ST at 1500 miles and put Pennzoil back in and approaching 2000 miles the leak is almost gone again. Kinda changed my opinion on ST.

Lubrizol has a disclaimer on the spider graph page saying it's not intended to compare specs from different families like I did, only to compare different specs from the same family or organization that developed the spec. That doesn't make much sense, if the 8 ring on the graph doesn't represent the same LSPI prevention value from say API to GM specs it's pretty worthless. The M1 ESP X2 is a really good oil, it doesn't have D1G3 cert but beats that spec in every parameter except LSPI.
