I bought a Nikon D3100 about a month ago. I don't know if you're still looking to purchase one, Brian, but it's in your price range (depending on where you get it) and takes some great shots. It's a 14.2 mp and shoots 1080p Full HD video.

Amazon is showing them at $699 right now but I bought mine at Sam's Club for $579 -- then took it back and made Best Buy match that price so I could get the 3-year accidental warranty.

I've been very happy with it thus far.
