On 12/9/23 i had just put my 4 year old granddaughter in her car seat, in the rear of my 2017 Chevy Equinox. I walked around the front and opened the driver's door. I got one leg in and felt the car move. The car dragged me as it rolled backwards out my driveway. I was able to turned the steering wheel enough to keep from crashing into the house across the street. The front tire ran over my right ankle. The driver's door hit the fence post bending off the hinge. The neighbor jumped in and pulled emergency brakes. Luckily my grand was okay and I only suffered minor injuries. We don't understand why this happened with the vehicle off.

Who are they? This is totally new to me.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
If you have a safety issue, like this, it should be reported. The reports can lead to a recall.

I did see a story about an equinox that just rolled away into traffic. They said the car was not in park, but I wonder if it jumped out of gear or if the selector doesn't display properly.

Off is irrelevant. Automatics should be left in Park. Standard transmission vehicles should be left in the lowest gear, usually low or reverse. IIRC the Equinox for 2019 warns you if you fail to leave in park. Better for any incline to take the pressure off transmission and use parking brake.

You left it in DRIVE!! OFF doesn't count! Never cars either put it in Park automatically or WARN you its in gear!
I left a 2015 Yukon in Drive while talking on my Cell . Turned Off engine and got out as it started to roll! Nailed brake just in time.....

Yep, drive too high a gear to prevent roll on anything but flat pavement. I routinely drive 3 different cars, and I have to pay attention to their differences. I agree with you.
