Recently I was driving my new Equinox on the freeway and noticed a loud roaring sound when I was driving at a consistent speed where the engine was at 1800 RPM. I am taking it into the dealer today. But my Son and I decided to try and figure it out ourselves. It appears that the noise cancellation system has an issue. When I put the car into manual shift and drive at 1800 RPM, there is a very loud 180 Hz tone that comes out of both rear speakers. It does not seem to do this at any other RPM. I am not sure how they sample the noise reduction, but I assume there is a microphone somewhere. There may be a phase differential error that is causing this. Hopefully the dealer can figure it out, it is very annoying. It mainly seems to happen with the rear seats folded down.

Well, now I am very dissapointed with Chevrolet! Just got a call from the dealer. They do not think that Chevy can fix this. They gave me the option of just disabling the feature. To me, that is nonsense! Shame on them.

The new Activ just became less appealing to me. Fortunately, since I work in radio. I can share my opinion with many morning shows around town. They LOVE to have things to discuss.

Wait, I'm confused.... we've been discussing a noise "the car makes", which we're trying to identify. What does that have to do with a microphone??? And where can this feature be turned off???

The 2025 Equinox comes with a noise cancellation system. It uses the rear speakers to inject an inverted sound to the noise being produced inside of the car, which much of the time cancels it. It appears that there is a flaw in the algorithm of the Digital Signal Processor that causes the phase to shift when the engine is between 1800-2000 RPM, thus increasing the noise at those frequencies. If your engine is in that "sweet spot", and you hear a loud rumbling. Reach behind your seat and place your hand over the rear speaker. You will feel the source of that noise. Per my service rep at the dealership. "GM is aware of the issue, and they working to find a solution" He did not give me any timeline, but said the I would be contacted when a fix was available. Oh, almost forgot. There is a microphone that takes noise samples so the system can work. My dealership told me that it can be turned off, but there is no control I can access to do so. This would require a trip the the dealer.
