Just got a new to me 2019 equinox 1.5ltr awd has about 71,000 miles on it. Had some shuddering and it slipped on me once took it to a very good transmission place they kept it for 2 days and 3 different people test drove it for 100 miles all together. They couldn't duplicate so I had them do a fluid change not a flush.

Been driving it for 3 days since and everything was great. Yesterday got a bad snow storm so had it in awd worked great.

Today put it in awd cause it was a little slick out leaving work and at about 30mph I thought the tranmission was going to fall out, it was a nasty grinding/ vibration noise. I pulled over and took it out of awd and and it stopped.

I hurried over to the transmission shop before they closed and had them kinda check it out/test drive it and he said something in the awd system was broken but should be fine to drive in 2wd.

I have to take it to them Monday cause they are not open on the weekend to have them tell me what's wrong with it.

My question is does anyone have any inkling what could be wrong with it? Or how much it could be?

On the 2018+, there is an electronic axle disconnect on the transfer case. When you press the AWD button, this actuator meshes the front right axle such that it will send power through the transfer case, which will then liven up and send power to the prop shaft to the rear carrier/differential. Power to the rear wheels only happens on demand. There is an electronic wet clutch at the input of the rear carrier/diff. If the front wheels spin out of sync with the rears, the wet clutch is what sends power to the rear wheels as needed.

Based on what you described, my first guess with the vibes and noise is something is up with the propeller shaft to the rear. Bad u joint. Bad carrier bearing, etc
