Hazard lights won't stop flashing 2011 Equinox

My wife noticed the hazard lights on the car began flashing while it was in the driveway. I went out and the lights would not turn off. Tried to start it and the battery was dead, dead. My key could be removed. The battery was 6 years old, so I replaced it. New battery and the hazard lights continued flashing. Since it's cheap, I plan to replace the hazard switch but any other ideas?

This may sound silly, but I have found that mine requires more of a continuous push of about 2 seconds to activate and deactivate.
