Had a P0171D code after transmission was shifting erratic. Changed the fluid, looked pretty good, but only drained about 3 1/2 quarts. Refilled till it came out the observation plug, started the engine and shifted through the gears twice, topped it off. Now slipping a lot in first gear after warmed up. Any thoughts? Thanks.

The engine needs to be idling with the transmission in park, with the ATF up to temp and the vehicle parked on a level surface to check level at the level check plug.

Fluid will pour out of the level check plug if you do the procedure wrong. Engine off, etc.

Done correctly, fluid should just dribble out when the level is correct.
